Refining a
DREAM

Chapter 5 of 12

Learn how to...

...make sure that your DREAM career marries up to your DREAM lifestyle too

DREAM to

DESTINATION

We’re coming into land and it feels good!

By this point, if you have followed us in order, you should by now have learned to be…

1. daring enough to DREAM.

2. creative enough to DREAM up the impossible.

3. bright enough to be able to test that your DREAM works for you.

4. hard-nosed enough to define and eliminate any DREAM blockers.

And now we come onto our final chapter in this section, called refining a DREAM. What a journey we have been on together.

Smile you're on CCTV.jpg

This final section is not for everyone. If you have clearly defined DREAMs already that stand up to all of the tests we have been through then you may choose to skip this small, concluding section. We suggest that you stay with us just for a few more moments just in case you ever change your mind. We don’t think you’ll regret doing so. Promise. If for no other reason than the funny picture of a penguin at the bottom of this page, but hopefully for the content too.

7 Questions that every DREAMER should be able to answer

Is now a good time to tell you that the picture of a penguin does not exist? Sorry to disappoint. Please don’t get mad with us. We just wanted to keep you hooked in. And we did so by promising you a picture…of a penguin. See that probably says more about you than it does about us.

But anyway, now that we have your attention, we want to let you know about questions that every good DREAMER should be able to answer and that every good DREAM should marry up to.

Let’s go…

Take him to your mum.png

1. Do you crave stability or adventure?

It’s kind of obvious when you think about it but if you crave a life of stability then don’t join the army. And if you crave adventure and you want to travel for a decade then please consider holding off on starting a family until you’ve done so as your new-born baby needs you.

2. How much do you actually value money?

People that say that money does not interest them are usually lying. Best way to test it is to offer them a pay-rise for no extra responsibility and see if they accept it. Yeah, few would rarely turn that down. So, what is the minimum amount that you personally would like to live on? You may need to do some calculations and some sums but don’t be foolish enough to think that every job pays the same as it doesn’t. So when refining your DREAM, work it out.

3. What causes are close to your heart?

Many of us have causes that resonate deeply within us. It may be linked to poverty, race equality, environmental issues, medicine development, women’s rights or any number of issues that society is currently facing. It may be something specific like educating jungle tribal women on menstrual hygiene or something global like slavery.

Follow up question is how do you plan to support these causes (if at all)? The more money you earn for example, the more you can give away to charity, should you choose to do so. The less hours you work in a week the more free-time you may have to volunteer at your local soup kitchen. Everything is a trade-off and whilst there is no ‘correct’ approach these things need to be considered when refining your DREAM future.

4. How risk averse are you?

People who are risk averse are more likely to enjoy being an employee rather than being an employer. People who are risk averse would likely stay clear of highly competitive fields where the chances of success are smaller than most, like politics for example, or stock-market trading.

5. How much do you value your evening and weekends?

If you live for a weekend seeing friends and socialising then certain jobs are perhaps not your DREAM career. Like taxi driving or nightclub security for example.

6. Are you willing to relocate for work?

If your DREAM future is based around you staying in the area where you grew up then there is no shame in that but you need to adjust your sights on finding your DREAM job and accommodation accordingly. The internet has done wonderful things but certain fields are very difficult to get into unless you are located in the right cities. Think fashion, high-end financial services and theatre, for example.

7. When do you want to retire?

Oh we get it. It’s an odd question to be asking a student of your age when you want to retire. But seriously, when do you want to retire? Only, if you wish to retire early then you will likely need a strategy. This strategy may likely involve either financial investing or perhaps even living on less now to be able to retire earlier later. Remember to factor these thoughts into your DREAM lifestyle as anything is obtainable if you plan for it.

Lacking belief?

Have a DREAM in mind but lack belief that you will achieve it? This will help...

And there we have it. We have given you plenty to think about. Now it’s over to you to start DREAMING, refining and prescribing your DREAM future.

Of course when you have ideas we recommend that you speak to the people around you for feedback and advice. Teachers, professors, social workers, parents, carers, friends, family friends…whoever.

Finally, remember that your plans may change constantly and that is ok. What is important is that you always have a DREAM on the go as that is what gives you fuel to work hard and achieve.

The next section is completely dedicated to helping you land the plane. Giving you practical tools over the next 7 chapters to help you fulfil everything that you desire. Dramatically increase your chance of going on to live the very DREAM that you have conjured up. We call it DESTINATION Landing and we look forward to seeing you there.

Have a think...

1. Does your current DREAM marry up to the seven questions above?

2. If not, what do you need to rethink, discuss or refine before moving on?
