Eliminating
DREAM
Blockers

Chapter 4 of 12

Learn how to...

...find out where we have imposed limitations on

our potential.

Find a way to move on positively and not let the DREAM blockers get in the way of our preferred DESTINATION.

DREAM to

DESTINATION

Everyone can have a DREAM. Overcoming those pesky DREAM blockers is the difficult bit. But those DREAM blockers are not always what you think they are…

Hidden Expectations

Most of us have an expectation of what our lives will turn out to look like. We might not recognise we do but we usually do. We have an idea of the kind of car we will drive or perhaps the university place that we hope to realistically secure. We probably have an idea about the kind of partner we’ll end up with and the amount of spare money we’ll have to spend on things we want to, like fashion or technology. These expectations have often become our ceilings or, as we like to call them, our DREAM blockers.

Now most of us would love to level all of the responsibility at someone else other than ourselves. If only my parents/guardians believed in me more; if only that school teacher didn’t speak to me like that; if only I had a better experience in my primary school; if only they had, if only she had, if only he had…

If only is a lonely phrase and we don’t like it one bit. It may speak to a truth but sometimes the truth is not helpful. We are here to help you overcome your DREAM blockers, not marvel in how these self-imposed limitations came about in the first place. We have no intention of giving them more credit than they deserve. After all they are but abstract ideas; figments of our imagination. We owe them nothing.

More males thank you.jpg

And frankly they are simply not helpful in our pursuit of living the biggest, best, most exciting life possible. Whether we inherited these blockers from experience or from others, by design or by default is completely irrelevant in many ways to our future. I mean go mend that broken relationship if it’s holding you back for sure and go see a counsellor if you feel you need to - they can be really useful in some instances for sure. But at Future decided we are not interested in the blame game. Instead, we’re in the people-changing business and hopefully the reason you are reading this is you are too.

Debunking myths

Have you ever considered what the difference is between your DREAM future, your expected future and something that you would reluctantly tolerate?

For some of us we have never allowed ourselves to fully DREAM and so there is little difference between the three options. Some of us have inadvertently and unknowingly blurred the line between what we would reluctantly tolerate and what we expect to become our future so much so that the line is barely visible between the two. It’s easily done. Imagine that you live in London. You DREAM of holidaying as an

adult in a 5* hotel in the Caribbean for 3 months a year. You expect, however, that you may more realistically afford a small caravanning holiday in France for 3 weeks a year. If it came to it then, you would reluctantly accept a week camping in your parent’s field as they own a farm and enjoy nice views.

Now a week’s camping might be your idea of heaven and if that is true then awesome but don’t let your love of camping miss the point here. The point is you had a DREAM but the blockers got in the way, realism hit and you happily settled for less than your own best without much of a fight.

Eliminating the blocker

The DREAM blockers could relate to any part of your life whatsoever. Anything from financial income to relationships, from health to family. The only thing they have in common is their need for elimination. And the only way to eliminate them is to refuse to settle for anything less than your desired best. Oh it takes work and it takes effort. We have already learned by now that we cannot sleep-walk into a high powered job without a fight. That is a given. And eliminating blockers is a fight in itself but it’s one that is worth the while getting right as it sets us up with a winning mind-set that is unflappable.

So in finishing this section of the chapters on DREAM building head to page 14 of your workbook and complete the Identifying my DREAM Blockers exercise (link to download below) and keep it somewhere visible and somewhere safe. Then when you feel yourself settling for second best then you can remind yourself that you were made for the best and you will fight for anything less than your DREAM future.

Have a think...

1. What hidden expectations have you debunked about yourself or your future that you would like to re-write?

2. How has your own upbringing affected your ability to DREAM (positively or negatively)?

3. What DREAMS have you knowingly shelved that you now want to resurrect?
