Building a
DREAM

Chapter 2 of 12

Learn how to...

...work out what you really want from life.

Be confident that your college/university application, future career and personal plans all coincide with your preferred future.

DREAM to

DESTINATION

Building a DREAM is fun. It incorporates every area of our lives. From the clothes we choose to wear, to the cars we get to drive and the homes we are able to live in. It incorporates a whole lifestyle, not just a college course or a future job. Yet many of us don’t know where to start.

At Future decided we like to draw up a simple two-step approach which is simply this:

DREAM building = passions + desire

In this section we’ll cover PASSIONS and in the following chapter (Testing a DREAM) we’ll look at DESIRE.

Question: What are your passions in life?

Truth is you probably have many as passions are so much bigger than hobbies. Passions include all interests you hold, causes close to your heart, lifestyles that you admire, progress you would like to see and ambitions you have for yourself. It often incorporates technology, the environment, fashion, transport, housing and relationships as well as other unique interests. Sometimes they are intense and obvious, other times they are well hidden and we have to unlock them. And unlocking them is often easier than you think it is. Let us give you an example…

Look at this picture below and write down your initial thoughts on what you see. We know it sounds like an odd thing to do but just go with us on this one. Then scroll down when you have finished.

Remote working

Odds are you couldn’t resist scrolling down here without having written down your initial thoughts could you?! We lack willpower too sometimes. It was a tough ask. For those that did have the self-discipline then respect, we admire your bravery. But for the rest of you hopefully you have had chance to process a few thoughts before we go further. If not your final chance to scroll back up quickly is now before we move on…last call…ok, here we go...

When you first looked at our friend Nadeer from the picture above sat working, what did you see? It sounds like an odd question but what you saw in many ways provides an insight into your passions. Let us explain…

Some of you saw her working casually at a café and thought that would be cool to have that kind of freedom to work wherever you so choose. Some of you were trying to work out what she was drinking as coffee is your thing. For others it was her hair that caught your attention. Some of you loved it, some of you had ideas of how she could better. Or maybe

Seeing is perceiving

Celebrating success

you had an opinion on the style of the jacket she was wearing. Others of you saw her computer and wondered what programme she was using, what hardware it had and whether it was any good or not. Some of you may have noticed her glasses and be attracted to either their design or her ability to now be able to work comfortably due to getting the chance to wear them in the first place. For others of you it was the advertising billboard that got you, for others the design of the table and chairs where she was sat. We could go on but hopefully you get our point here.

Now, some of you may even have disengaged with the image completely as none of your interests (subconscious or otherwise) were tickled by what you saw. That’s also ok and a completely reasonable response. But you all had a response to something in that image. And how you saw that image may indicate something about your passions.

A Sunny Afternoon

So next time you get a free afternoon we’d encourage you to go for a walk around the town or city where you live. What captures your eye? What jobs do you see people doing that interest you or you could never see yourself doing as it holds no interest to you? What lifestyles are you attracted to from the people you see around you? Jot these down in a diary somewhere and as you do you’ll notice your DREAM starting to take shape.

Now head to your workbook and complete

Happy teenager

the Passion Shaper found on pages 9-10 (link to download below). It’s not one-dimensional in its outcome so please don’t expect to have your future by the end of it but it’s a great place to start.

Then, when you have completed that join us in looking at the next section of the equation which is DESIRE.

Note to staff

The concept of discovering your passions in life by walking around your town is unpacked in more detail here
